satoshi kon : : perfect blue, paprika and other anime legacies

On August 24 last year, the anime world was jolted by the untimely death of one of its most creative talents, Satoshi Kon, 今 敏. When he succumbed to pancreatic cancer at the unreasonably early age of 46, Kon left behind a legacy comprising a small catalogue of animated films that are rated among the best of the genre. GIven his age, his greatest works were undoubtedly yet to be made; though fans will have one more opportunity to savor the creative talent of Kon as MADHOUSE studios is currently preparing to release his unfinished film, Yume-miru kikai – The Dream Machine, sometime this year.

The upmarket depato food halls have been chock-a-block with women the last couple of days as have grocery stores and specialty chocolatiers: In a novel variation of the Valentine’s Day gift giving custom, it’s the annual Japanese Valentine’s Day chocolate buying frenzy. Traditionally intended as gifts for the men in their lives, chocolates are also now given by women as gifts to their girlfriends. And when it comes to chocolate, Tokyo has some of the world’s finest chocolate establishments: We present some of them here.

ginza’s gallery koyanagi & hiroshi sugimoto
